Part of the appeal of Tumblr is that it’s a place where you can find hilarious memes and be immersed in Black art and literature in equal measure. And in a world where books and literary culture are still dominated by white male writers, spaces that celebrate Black books and Black authors are incredibly valuable. Here are five great blogs/Tumblrs for book lovers that are looking  for new books to read, are interested in the Harlem Renaissance or are in search of  online spaces that are celebrating diverse literature.

  1. Writing Blackness

    1. From GIFs of Black visual artists drawing to quotes by legendary Black writers, Writing Blackness is a beautifully curated blog that looks like something you might get if Zora Neale Hurston had a Tumblr. The blog includes gems like this GIF of artist Georgette Seabrooke and this still relevant poem  by poet Claude Mckay. The blog is a project of the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture to promote an exhibition about the Harlem Renaissance called “Writing Blackness: Harlem | Paris.”

    1. The first sentence of this blog’s about statement says it all: “let’s be real, we all know Solange got Audre Lorde in her bookshelf…” Started by the blogger behind Preta Power, this clever Tumblr combines design, feminist texts and Solange Knowles’ eclectic fashion sense to celebrate Black feminism and give you new outfit ideas and books to lust over.Screen Shot 2014-10-27 at 2.18.16 PM

  3. Shit I’ve Learned From Books Written by White Men

    1. Shit I’ve Learned from Books Written by White Men is a smart collection of quotes, asks, book suggestions and GIFs that often boldly articulate what everyone is thinking  but no one says when it comes to diversity in publishing and literature. Whether its a crass Chimamanda Adichie quote about the inaccessibility of American fiction or a Wyatt Cenac GIF about race and fantasy movies readers will be sure to find something that will make them laugh or nod their heads.Screen Shot 2014-10-27 at 2.18.58 PM

This tumblr celebrates Smith’s immense literary talent and her penchant for cute headwraps with pictures of the literary icon looking fashionable while signing books or saying important things about writingScreen Shot 2014-10-27 at 2.19.31 PM

  5. Roxane Gay

    1. Haitian-American author and professor Roxane Gay is a rising literary icon whose insightful prose and new books ‘Bad Feminist’ and ‘An Untamed State’  have won her widespread acclaim. Her Tumblr is a chance for readers to look into the mind of one of the country’s best writers whose experiences and understanding of the world isn’t all that different from their own.
