It’s been 10 years since the literary world lost one of its greatest writers, Octavia E. Butler.
After Butler passed away in 2006, the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, inherited Butler’s archives, and the collection which includes “8,000 individually cataloged items and more than 80 boxes of additional items,” are now being made public The collection includes notes and drafts of books.
But one interesting piece of the collection is a goal list Butler wrote to herself in 1988:
Butler wrote:
“I shall be a bestselling writer… each of my books will be on the bestseller lists of LAT, NYT, PW, WP, etc. My novels will go onto above lists whether publishers push them hard or not.”

Although writing goals isn’t something a lot of people enjoy doing, especially if they can’t seem to hold themselves accountable for them, it seems as though Butler spoke (or wrote) her goals into existence.
