If you follow L.A.-based artist Markus Prime on Instagram then you already know he absolutely adores Black women.
Prime regularly sketches Black women of every shade and body type, kicking ass and getting loved up in some super dope, often sexy NSFW ways. A huge comic book and cartoon head, Prime’s latest creation is a collection called B.R.U.H. (Black Renditions of Universal Heroes), and despite the title, Black women are once again at the center of it all.
“I could have easily drawn Black men. I did when I was younger. But for some reason, I just felt compelled to draw Black women,” Prime told Paper Magazine.
He continued: “A lot of my art was a journey for me — I was learning a lot about myself as a man and also trying to learn a lot of things. You know, we have a lot of ways that we present Black women in media and how we treat Black women. I’m trying to learn to re-approach how we represent Black women. It wasn’t necessarily ‘I’m supposed to do this’ or ‘I have to,’ but it just felt natural. I might change it soon, but that’s what I’ve been doing right now.”
In B.R.U.H. Prime remixes classic characters from video games, comics, Powerpuff Girls, and Dragon Ball Z to showcase Black women of every type imaginable.
This sketchbook isn’t Prime’s first release. He also teamed up with Amandla Stenberg to illustrate her graphic series, Niobe.
While a lot of Prime’s work is NSFW, B.R.U.H. is suitable for children. In fact, he flipped the characters to help kids of color see themselves in their favorite cartoons.
The book is “more just to make people think and change the way young children of color think,” he explained.
